The arrival of Laser, less than a year after Radio Caroline had returned to European waters, 
led to a revival of interest in offshore radio in the mid-1980’s, and Laser quickly built up a huge audience. Shops, cafés, 
building sites and car radios were tuned to Laser 558 in London and the south of England.

The UK government didn’t share listeners enthusiasm, and blockaded the radio ships, 
eventually forced Laser 558 off the air – but not before Laser had forced change in UK radio.

Laser returned as Laser Hot Hits, but although there was great enthusiasm and excellent production, 
a series of mast collapses caused a loss of advertising revenue, and the end of Laser.
